A Thule rack or a Yakima rack will increase the already giant capacity of an SUV, or help that gear head pack a hybrid vehicle full of toys. A base rack system enhances the capabilities of a factory rack, by adding longer crossbars to carry more gear.
In some instances, a cargo box mounted on a factory rack inhibits the trunk from fully opening, making a base car rack that much more useful. The base rack will lift the cargo box up high enough to allow the trunk to open.
It can be difficult to find a bike rack or canoe rack that will mount directly to a factory rack. With a Thule or Yakima base rack system, this is never an issue. Over 90% of Yakima products will mount on Thule racks and vice versa.
